The best rider of his generation, and possibly any generation, arrives in Barcelona chasing a record-equalling fifth Tour de France and a third straight yellow jersey. Pogačar has turned his late twenties into a private expansion pack: Grand Tours, Monuments, world titles, stage races and one-day ambushes all seem to bend toward the same attacking instinct. The rainbow bands do not make him cautious. They make him more visible when he launches from too far out, asks UAE to burn the race down, and turns a tactical question into a physical referendum.

What makes him so hard to race is the absence of a single weak terrain. He can win a reduced sprint, ride the cobbles, float through steep Ardennes climbs, survive long Alpine altitude and still treat a time trial like a weapon rather than damage limitation. UAE's 2026 squad is built around that breadth. Politt and Vermeersch shelter him in wind and stress, McNulty and Wellens stabilize the tactical middle of stages, and Yates, Del Toro and Großschartner give him layers of climbing support once the race breaks into altitude.

For all the numbers, his most unnerving quality is how playful his violence looks. Pogačar races with a grin, talks lightly, then attacks as if the finish line has moved twenty kilometres closer for him alone. The 2026 Tour asks whether anyone can create enough disorder to make him manage risk instead of creating it. If they cannot, he has the team, the engine and the appetite to turn another July into a comparison with Merckx rather than with his contemporaries.
