At 36, the 2014 world champion is the compass of this team — the road captain whose decade of winning everything from Milan-San Remo to Tour mountain stages gives the young leaders their bearings. Kwiatkowski fought back from injury this season purely to make this race, then won the Polish time trial title weeks before the start. 'Racing the Tour de France was my motivation to come back,' he says. 'At times it felt almost impossible.'
